LED…is it worth the hype?

LED, we’ve been hearing a lot about it lately wether its in on social media or in the latest edition of vogue. So what exactly even is LED? LED stands for light-emitting diode which is a device used to reduce acne, increase skin circulation, and improve the collagen content in the skin. Or so it claims. In 2020 during the height of the pandemic we’ve seen influencers, estheticians, celebrities and everyone in between snapping pictures with LED devices, wearable masks, and even visors used easily inside your home.

With the ever increasing popularity it has led esthetician's and client’s alike asking does this really do anything for our skin? The answer is yes. Let’s go into a little science now…LED technology is nonthermal, which means it doesn’t use heat. LED individual wavelengths are used at low intensity and are not as strong as laser or IPL. LED uses visible light such as blue, red or amber. These different colors of light produce different effects on the skin.

LED has been shown in clinical studies to significantly help the lymph system and increase ATP energy production in the cells. So why should we care about this? The fact that LED has been proven to increase ATP energy production is astounding as ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) is the main source of energy for most cellular processes. So as we are receiving these LED treatments we may not see immediate results but over time the Light-emitting diode is increasing our ATP, and overall extending lifespan and contraction mobility of our facial muscles, and skin long term.

Not only does LED benefit client’s with goals oriented to anti aging and lifting skin. But acne client’s due to the ability to significantly reduce bacteria on the skin using LED’s blue light setting. Each color of light corresponds to a different depth in the skin. When the colored light reaches a specific depth in the skin, it triggers a reaction such as stimulating circulation or reducing the amount of bacteria on the skin. Overall it is an excellent form device to be used in the treatment room. But, we really want to make sure this type of device is being used daily at home and often in the treatment room to get the ultimate benefits it has to offer.
